The Difference Between Large Spangle and Small Spangle Galvanized Steel Sheets
The primary differences between large spangle and small spangle galvanized steel sheets lie in their spangle size, surface flatness, manufacturing process controls, and intended applications. Both fall under the category of spangled galvanized steel, yet they exhibit distinct differences in terms of appearance and performance.
1. Spangle Size and Appearance
Large Spangle: The diameter of the zinc spangles typically exceeds 3mm. They are clearly visible to the naked eye, appearing as irregular snowflake-like or flocculent crystals; they possess high reflectivity and exhibit distinct industrial textural characteristics.
Small Spangle:The diameter of the zinc spangles is approximately 1–2mm. The crystallization is finer and denser, resulting in a relatively uniform surface; while the spangle pattern remains visible, it is significantly more delicate than that of the large spangle variety.
2. Differences in Formation Processes
Large Spangle: Produced using the traditional hot-dip galvanizing process, which involves adding elements such as lead or antimony to the molten zinc bath. This addition extends the solidification time, thereby promoting the growth of zinc crystals and resulting in the formation of large-sized spangles.
Small Spangle: During the cooling process, the density of crystallization nuclei is increased—typically by spraying water mist or zinc powder onto the surface. This technique inhibits the excessive growth of zinc crystals, thereby yielding spangles that are smaller in size and more uniformly distributed.
3. Selection for Specific Applications
Large Spangle Sheets: Primarily utilized for structural components where aesthetic requirements are not stringent—specifically in concealed applications—such as light steel framing, ventilation ducts, and the structural frameworks of agricultural greenhouses.
Small Spangle Sheets:Due to their superior surface flatness, these sheets are widely employed in applications requiring subsequent painting or those involving exposed surfaces—such as appliance casings, substrates for architectural curtain walls, and automotive components.
